Sourceforge files safe

They may have "fixed" the problems in the meantime, but I don't trust them not to do it again. Since I posted my last review they have cleaned up their act. Even Windows Users can breathe easily here now: they have new owners who shut down the "Install Wrappers" on their projects within 6 months. I now trust and recommend them again. Twisted World. Offers loads of software that contains addware and runs advertisements for MacKeeper Scareware scam software.

Whetsit Tuya. I had always thought that SourceForge was a trustworthy site that was safe and beyond suspicion. Make sure this site is thoroughly and permanently blocked in your HOSTS file and in all other security programs. While many downloads on this site are safe, there is some malware to be aware of.

I don't like it when official websites redirect their download links here because there is often unwanted programs that come with other things you download. If possible, only download software from the official site, not CNet, not Sourceforge, etc And no, I don't agree that this is a good site. In addition to trouble with their ads looking like download buttons and leading to malware, they have begun to commandeer "abandoned" open source projects so they can bundle advertisements in the installer.

Avoid using SourceForge to download software. Or, better yet, skip all the usual downloading and install the most useful applications using Ninite.

If you do have to download from SourceForge, be careful to avoid the downloads that include the SourceForge installer. Go out of your way to grab the direct downloads instead.

And, by the way, SourceForge is now bundling junkware with their Mac downloads too — just like Download. If you want to see what it actually does, be sure to test it in a real Windows system on a physical machine, not a virtual machine. This is the same sort of behavior that malicious applications are increasingly using to avoid detection and analysis.

Sourceforge is a housing for open source stuff anyway so I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to bundle a virus inside it. After all, who in their right mind would try to hide a virus in something where all the code is visible…. It may not stay up for long but it could still hit early downloaders. But I guess I am wrong?
